On Tuesday, the Municipal Council adopted the FY 2023 City Budget, following their truth-in-taxation public hearing on August 2. It has been a really productive budget season and the Administration has been appreciative of the collaboration and good will during the entire budget process. Budgeting is the most important policy process of the year, and the budget sets the stage for what the elected officials hope to accomplish in the coming year.

Last week, we had the opportunity to celebrate the retirement of Library Director Gene Nelson and to congratulate Carla Gordon on her first day as our new Library Director. Gene had an amazing career and set a very high standard in so many ways. We will miss him a lot!

But we are super excited to work with Carla and know that she will take the library to new heights in an ever changing and evolving world!

Why asking "why" can empower your leadership

"Why" is a crucial word in leadership, writes Steve McKee, because it can reveal motivation and help teams understand decisions that may affect them. "Helping people understand why you're cutting that product line, why the organization is going remote (or not) or why the company won't take a position on a controversial political issue may not satisfy everyone, but a logical explanation goes a long way in rationalizing even the most potentially unpopular opinion," McKee writes.

A Fond Farewell

Karen Tapahe, the Municipal Council's communications specialist and head of the neighborhood program, is leaving this week to begin work on the public communications team in Orem City working specifically with the Mayor and City Council. Karen has done a remarkable job for us and has been an amazing support to the Provo PIO team. We wish her well, and are glad she will still be a Provo resident so we can see her regularly! Best wishes, Karen!

The Mayor's Week

City Council meetings
Meetings with several city employees
Hosting the Utah County Mayors and others at a dinner and tour of the new city hall
Meeting with the Council Chair, Vice-Chair and Council staff
